Enameling is the fusion of a special powdered glass to metals. Several techniques can be used to apply the glass, but all enamel methods use heat to melt the powder. Enamel is also the word used to describe a metal object (generally gold, copper, or silver) that has been decorated with powdered glass to create enamel rings. The glass is fired at a high temperature until it becomes red-hot and melted to smoothness. At roughly 1500 degrees Fahrenheit, the heat fuses the enamel permanently to the metal base. The enamel is then polished and resembles a jewel-like brilliance which creates a gorgeous diamond enamel ring.
The art of enameling dates back a couple of thousands of years. The ancient Egyptians who used filigree metalwork to set precious and semi-precious gemstone enamels, used a variation of techniques. One of the most famous examples of enamel is the gold mask of King Tut with its fabulous design and brilliant colors. Unlike jewelry of precious gemstones, diamond enamel rings jewelry derived its value from the intricacy and skill of the craftsmen.
